During a recent brand study in which 20,000 Belgians participated, Leonidas came out as the absolute winner in the chocolate category. What's more: 1 in 3 Belgian quality pralines sold is of the Leonidas brand. Moreover, 55% of Belgians state that Leonidas is their favorite praline brand. Not bad at all in the chocolate country par excellence, right?
Of course! Our products can be ordered via our webshop.
Chocolate appeals to all our senses: our eyes, skin, ears, taste and smell. Each praline should look soft and shiny and have a rich brown colour. It should not smell too strongly of sugar. A perfectly made praline should crackle at the first bite. If a praline starts to melt in your hand before you bite into it, it means that it contains a lot of cocoa butter, which is a good sign. Let the praline melt gently in your mouth: you should not feel any grains. With a second or third bite, the extra aromas of the filling are released. Finally, gently press the praline against the roof of your mouth so that the flavours fully develop there. Take your time to enjoy it. We took our time making it too.
Since 3 August 2003, a European directive has allowed manufacturers to use vegetable fats (instead of cocoa butter) in the composition of their chocolates, but under very strict conditions. This directive has caused quite a stir among manufacturers and consumers. Leonidas has always taken a clear and unambiguous position on this issue. Leonidas will always continue to use 100% cocoa butter.
Palm oil, a raw material that has been the subject of much controversy, is not used by Leonidas as an ingredient for its pralines.
However, Leonidas specifies that there are traces of palm oil in the orangettes. These traces (< 1%) are the result of the processing of the candied orange strips by the supplier.
However, Leonidas has decided to look for alternatives without palm oil and is working with its suppliers to avoid the last percentages of palm oil.
It all depends on the type of allergy. Our Leonidas products contain a certain number of ingredients that could cause allergies or intolerances (such as milk, soy, gluten or nuts). If you suffer from a food allergy, please send us an e-mail. We will be happy to tell you which pralines you can eat without any problems. In summary:
Eggs and egg derivatives (albumin)
Some products use pieces of biscuit that may contain protein. Traces of egg can therefore be present in a large number of products. The jelly, orange and lemon slices also contain albumin.
Gluten
Gluten is a molecule found in grains such as wheat, barley, oats and their derivatives such as malt. Some Leonidas products are made with ingredients that contain gluten or traces of gluten and may therefore contain gluten.
Dried fruits
All Leonidas products may contain traces of dried fruits. Many Leonidas products contain nuts as the main ingredient (hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans, ...).
Milk (lactose, milk proteins, ...)
Dairy products are of course crucial ingredients in the preparation of most Leonidas products. Despite the strict cleaning procedures, traces of milk can be present in all products, including products that do not contain milk or milk derivatives as an ingredient.
Leonidas suppliers guarantee that the soy lecithin used comes exclusively from soy from plants that are very strictly controlled for the presence of genetically modified soy. They guarantee that the PCR analyses are negative.
As for glucose and glucose-containing products, our suppliers guarantee either that they are manufactured from wheat starch that has not been genetically modified, or that the origin has been controlled for the presence of genetically modified corn.
